Joe Devoy places second at State

Despite the fact that CIS academics outperform CIS sports, certain students rise to the challenge and improve CIS athletics’ reputation. One of them is Joe Devoy, who placed second overall in the MSHSAA state tournament held in mid-May.

“This year, it was a nice experience,” Devoy said. “Even though it was only me, I enjoyed wearing my school’s uniform and competing for our school.”

The CIS golf team has paired with a number of schools since its inception in 2008, including Rock Bridge, Hickman, and Battle, but this year, Devoy represented the school alone at state.

Devoy had previously competed in co-op golf alongside Battle and Hickman. Devoy’s passion for golf began when he was a child; he would watch and play with his father and was inspired by his father. Devoy’s enthusiasm for golf stems from his life’s experiences and connections, and he feels it is a wonderful way to spend time with family and friends. Devoy followed his father’s passion and his brother’s legacy.

Devoy’s brother, Will Devoy, qualified for state in 2008 while representing CIS in a co-op with RBHS. Joe continued Will’s tradition by qualifying for the state championships in 2019, 2021, and 2022. “I think I enjoy golf because it is competitive, but I also want to keep playing because my brother and father both play,” Devoy said.

Devoy likes the mental component of golf and how it is always possible to improve. Devoy didn’t have any expectations coming into the season before it started, but he saw it as a unique chance to make state and have fun.

Devoy played enough tournaments to qualify him for Class 1 State at the MHSAA State Championship. Going into state, Devoy was relaxed and realized that he would do the best he could and fortunately for him, he placed second in class one. Joe would play for hours throughout the Class 1 State competition, which lasted two days.

Devoy was outstanding on both days, finishing in a tie for first place on the first day of the event but finishing second on the second day. Overall, Devoy has done a good job representing CIS, and he is pleased with how the season has gone.

“Overall, I’m happy with how the season went. I think I pushed myself as hard as I could,” he said.
