8 Proven Strategies to Boost Test Scores & Beat Testing Anxiety
By Meredith Corrado and Kyie Trenhaile
Struggling with test anxiety? You’re not alone. But the good news is, there are simple habits you can adopt to boost your test scores and calm your nerves. In this article, we explore eight effective to help you prepare more efficiently, reduce stress, and perform their best when it counts. Ready to turn anxiety into confidence? Let’s dive in!
- Retrieval Practice: Instead of passively reading your notes, quiz yourself regularly on the material. This helps strengthen memory retention and highlights areas you need to revisit.
- Dual Coding: Make drawings about what you’re learning. When information is encoded in both verbal and visual codes, it is easier to remember.
- Spaced Practice: Don’t wait, review material multiple times over increasing intervals. This technique helps solidify information in your long-term memory and reduces the risk of cramming.
- Get Sleep: Never underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep. It helps consolidate memories and improves focus during your study sessions.
- Break It Down: Avoid cramming. Break your study sessions into manageable chunks, focusing on one topic at a time. Taking short breaks in between helps maintain concentration. We suggest 10 minute breaks for every hour of studying.
- Teach What You Learn: Explaining concepts out loud to yourself or someone else reinforces understanding. Teaching forces you to clarify your thoughts and identify gaps in knowledge.
- Practice Tests: Familiarize yourself with exam formats and types of questions. Practicing past quizzes (and tests if your teacher will provide them) builds confidence and enhances your test-taking strategy.
- Practice Testing Conditions: Simulate real test conditions by timing yourself while taking practice exams. This helps you get used to the pressure and improves time management during the actual test. It also helps you pinpoint areas where you need more practice.
Adopting these habits will help you study smarter and perform better on your exams!
